Resume/curriculum vitae/personal history
Ken-ichi Ueda received the B.S. M.S. degrees in electrical engineering
from Osaka University in 1969 1971, respectively. He received Dr. Sci.
degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Tokyo in 1977.
He was with the R&D center of JEOL from 1971 to 1976, where
he investigated atomic spectroscopy its applications. From 1976 to 1981,
he was a staff of the Physic Department of Sophia University in Tokyo,
where he studied the relaxation processes of CO2 lasers. After joining
the Institute for Laser Science at University of Electro-Communications
in 1981 he investigated the kinetics of KrF excimers the physics on generation
of intense relativistic e-beams. He developed a high power KrF laser facility
including multi-staged amplifiers a target chamber for laser-plasma interaction.
He investigated ultra-high peak power lasers in the range of nanosecond
to sub-picosecond pulse duration. Since 1990 he began to develop the ultra-stabilized
laser-diode-pumped solid laser system for gravitational wave detection.
He developed super-white light generation laser rainbow using self-trapping
phenomena in gases solids irradiated by intense ultra-short pulses. Recently
he developed several new concepts on solid state lasers like active mirror
lasers, VPS lasers, hybrid laser crystals with multi-functional operations,
multiple beam output amplifiers and so on. His current interests covers
wide area of laser applications. He is also a pioneer of ultra-high
quality optics in Japan. He is a leader of a national program for
the development of high power fiber lasers for industrial applications.
He is the professor and director of Institute of Laser Science.
He is also a guest professor of National Astronomical Observatory since
1996. He is a member of Joint Open Laboratory on Laser Crystals Precision
Measurements of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Ueda is a member of the OSA (Optical Society of America), APS (American
Physical Society), IEEE (Institute of Electrical Electronics Engineers),
Physical Society of Japan, JSAPiJapanese Society of Applied Physicsj,
Institute of Electrical Engineering of Japan, Laser Society of Japan, Optical
Society of Japan, Fusion Society of Japan, Quantum Electronics Division
of JSAP, CRC (Cosmic Ray Community).
Dr. Ueda is the topical editor of Applied Optics since 1996.
He is also a foreign member of editorial board of Russian Journal of Quantum
Electronics since 1999. He is an associate editor of Optical Review,
Review of Laser Engineering. He is an associate book editor of "Laser and
Applications" of John Weily & Sons. He is a board member of OSA
(Optical Society of America), IPAP(Institute of Pure and Applied Physics)
and LSJ (Laser Society of Japan), and the secretary general of OSA Tokyo
section board.
