Abstract
A review will first be presented of the developments of optical wave
theory from a discipline which deals with idealized deterministic
fields to more realistic fields that undergo random statistical
fluctuations. This is the domain of optical coherence theory and the
theory of polarization. Some recent developments will then be reviewed.
In particular the influence of coherence on the spectra of radiated
fields will be discussed and it also will be shown that partially
coherent beams may be more useful for some applications than fully
coherent laser beams.
